Die cutting is the process of using a die to shear webs of low-strength materials, such as rubber, fiber, foil, cloth, paper, paperboards, plastics, foam and sheet metal. Die cutter machines can be divided in flatbed or rotary presses. Rotary die cutters are often used in line with printing. The difference between rotary die cutters and flatbed die cutters is that usually the flatbed machines are not as fast as the rotary machines, however the tools for flatbed machinery are usually cheaper.

What is a die cutting machine?

A die cutting machine is a versatile tool used in various industries to precisely cut and shape different materials. It is a crucial component in the packaging and printing industry, allowing for the efficient production of custom shapes, perforations, and creases. Die cutting machines utilize specialized dies to shear low-strength materials such as rubber, fiber, foil, cloth, paper, paperboards, plastics, foam, and sheet metal. The two primary types of die cutting machines are rotary die cutting machines and flatbed die cutting machines.

Rotary die cutting machine

The process of rotary die cutting is using a cylindrical die on a rotary press. A long sheet or web of material will be fed through the press into an area known as a “station”, which holds a rotary tool that will cut out shapes, make perforations or creases or cut the sheet in to smaller parts. A series of gears will make sure that the die rotates at the same speed as the rest of the press. Machines used for this process can incorporate multiple stations, which die cut a particular shape into the material.

Different kinds of dies can be used in die cutting:

  • Engraved dies have a higher tolerance as they are created out of a solid steel bar.
  • Adjustable dies have removable blades, which are easily replaced with other blades to cut a different material.
  • Magnetic plate tooling has a cylinder which has magnets placed inside, where the engraved metal plate is wrapped around the cylinder base, holding it into place thanks to the magnets on the inside of the cylinder.

Rotary die cutting is a quick and consistent way of cutting, which is highly suitable for high volume production. However rotary die cutting machines are not the best choice when it comes to die cutting thicker materials or low volumes.

Flatbed die cutting machine

Flatbed die cutting is also known as steel rule die cutting. It is a fabrication process which employs a flatbed die cutting press and custom steel dies, to convert material into custom shapes. Where rotary die cutters are not suitable for thicker materials, flatbed die cutters are mainly suited to process thicker material, cut larger parts and produce small volumes.

Typically, a flatbed die cutting machine features a fixed base with a head that is able to move. The cutting dies of a flatbed die cutting machine are made of sharp metal strips, known as rules. A flatbed die cutting process is capable of cutting through soft and thin materials, as well as hard and thick materials. The cutting blade is mounted into a die base, which is then installed on the plate assembly.
